London Gliding Club

in one day

One Day Course

A One Day Course offers the best way to start learning, or to really experience limitless flying.

You will be paired up with two other students and a qualified instructor and spend the day learning all aspects of flying and airfield operations. By the end of the day you'll be in control of the glider, doing almost all of the flight yourself!

Included are three 2000 foot aerotows, lunch, three months of membership, a booklet on gliding, a training card and a log book - everything you need to continue learning afterwards.

Time

You will have several flights throughout the day. Please arrive before 9:00 to to check in with reception. If you arrive earlier, our club has an excellent restaurant, and the 'Billington Breakfast' is higly recommended!

You should have completed all your flying by 17:30, though depending on the weather you may finish earlier.

Additionally, you are likely to have some time where you can take phone calls or use our free Wifi to catch up on emails.

Numbers

Our instructional gliders have two seats - one for you and one for your instructor

Your instructor will be allocated to you and at the most two other students

Syllabus

The first aerotow introduces basic handling, and lookout.
The second flight works to improve on your handling to develop coordinated turns, and on thermic days some thermalling.
The third flight introduces the landing circuit (landing pattern) and depending on your flying skills, you will get to bring the glider into circuit and prepare it for landing.

Additionally your instructor will provide thorough briefings on what your are learning. And all our instructors are gliding enthusiasts so will be happy to answer any questions you may have!

Spectators
Your friends and family are always welcome. They can watch from the launch point, or from the restaurant. We'd recommend a camera and a pair of binoculars. If you bring children you need to make sure they are fully supervised as LGC is an active airfield.

Dress Code
Wear flat, soft soled shoes and warm, comfortable clothes. Don't forget to bring sunglasses and a a sun hat with a narrow brim. It's a good idea to bring a windproof jacket and, in the winter, gloves as airfields tend to be quite exposed. Once you are in the glider you are enclosed and out of the wind.

Availability
We are open 364 days a year, and book lessons on most of these. During the busy flying season, between May and September, advance booking is essential. All flying is weather dependent, so please check with the office to confirm it is suitable before setting out.

Come Again!
The voucher entitles the holder to a three month membership allowing you to come back and fly again at the same rates as a member.
