London Gliding Club

finishing

The 80+ mph dash from the last thermal to the airfield is called the final glide.

Rather than bouncing from thermal to thermal, the final glide is a straight run back to the airfield. It requires concentration and skill to fly the optimum speed to ensure the most efficient return to the airfield. Too fast and you may end up landing short, too slow and you throw away valuable time!

Often several gliders are neck and neck, jostling for the seconds that might put them into the lead.
